PE at Oakham C of E Primary School
Our school is lucky enough to be a part of the Rutland School Partnership, which helps organise and run various sporting events as well as offer teachers and staff training and coaching in a variety of sports. They offer support for the PE coordinator with regular updates and training 3 times a year regarding subject development and leadership and provides a network across the schools with regards to PE.
Every class has the chance to go swimming whilst they are here. Foundation and Key Stage One classes swim twice a year in 6 week blocks. They are fortunate enough to use our very own pool here at school! Key Stage Two swim once a year in 6 week blocks at Oakham School’s larger pool.
All teachers plan and deliver 2 PE sessions a week. One session is based inside the large hall and the other is outdoor, either on our ball court or playing field. All children must bring the correct kit and leave it in school for the week. Teachers are also encouraged to wear suitable sports clothes when teaching lessons.
We have also continued with the Olympic Legacy Programme and have been a part of the Young Ambassadors of Sport in Rutland initiative. We currently have two year 6 girls who are our ambassadors and they have been receiving training throughout the past year. They learn and develop new and exciting skills in a variety of sports and bring them back to our school. They even used these new skills to run a Multi-sports club for Year 1 children at lunch time. We will be recruiting some new ambassadors for the coming year…so watch this space!
As well as delivering up to 2 hours of physical education a week we also offer a range of sporting clubs and teams to join every term. Some are run by outside agencies who enjoy coming back to Oakham C of E year after year, such as FDS. Other clubs are run by the staff themselves and are always looking for new children to come and have a go and join the team!
